E siamo a 3!

Londra!

La nostra stanza - Our room

La nostra casa - Our home
La vista da una delle finestre -  The view from one of the windows

Speriamo bene!

London!
Here I am at last!

We are already in the third week in the British capital and I’m still in the adjustment phase.
I want to start by saying that conversely to what my mother had thought, and probably my boyfriend too, my suitcases are already arranged and my belongings have a collocation, although it is provisory. It seemed an impossible feat but there haven’t been problems with finding a place for all my clothes, personal stuff, bags and even the shoes. After some well-thought-out purchase, the room is gaining a more personal imprint and is surely tidier, but we’ll wait until we’ll move to a place that is all ours to do more binding purchases. The house would be very nice if it would have been maintained better, it’s surely very noisy because of the wooden floor and when some of the flatmates walk or use the stairs we all know it. Overall I don’t complain, mostly because I think that in three months we won’t be living here anymore and that, considering the prices, our next residence will probably be a storage closet with a bathroom and a kitchen!
It’s necessary that I find a job as soon as possible or we’ll have to share the house with other people for another year.
Living on my own I’ve discovered an hidden aspect of my nature: I like that the room where I stay, it can be mine, the kitchen or the bathroom, it’s clean and tidy and if it’s not when I enter it has to be when I exit. Maybe it’s the fact that I have too much spare time or that there isn’t my mother to tidy up or simply I want to demonstrate something to myself but I like to live in an attended house. Of course, it isn’t very simple, we are six in the house, the bathroom is only one and let’s say that we haven’t the same idea of cleanness but it’s sufficient to adapt a little bit.

I’ve already lived together with my boyfriend and other people when I lived in Cagliari and it has been a terrible experience. Our flatmates weren’t particularly friendly and every day they were up to no good: they didn’t want to do a grocery in common for the kitchen towels, the water, the toilet papers, the detergents etc. But then they employed our stuffs without permission; they created shift for the cleaning, well organized I have to say, but it ended that they cleaned when they had time with the work-excuse, so sometimes the bathrooms and the kitchen were cleaned twice in a day and other times when nobody would lay a hand on them. There wasn’t solidarity, everyone spoke behind the others back and between the perv guy and the clumsy guy who was capable to obstruct three times the wc with the kitchen towels, there was a reason of stress every day. After five months my boyfriend and I acknowledged that staying in that home would result in us splitting up so we went back to our homes. Now six years have passed and I believe we are ready to this important step and it doesn’t matter that for three months we have to share the house with other people!
Tooting Bec
These first weeks have passed quickly: I’ve got to know better, Hanwell, our neighborhood, and I’ve visited also some zones of London, Hammersmith and Tooting with my travel companion. I signed up at the library and I located a park where to go when it’s a good day, other definition to reconsider that of a “good day”. I’ve tried some local food (does kebab count?) and above all I’ve had the interview for the NIN and from now I’m on the book, I’ve improved my curriculum and applied for a lot of job advertisements. I have to admit that without my boyfriend I would have taken it easy or better said I would have waited for inspiration!

Hanwell al tramonto - Hanwell on the sunset

At last some results are coming: next week I’ll have jobs interviews for jobs which I’m really interested in and furthermore I’ll start to do voluntary work in two structures near home, seeing that I have lot of free time I want to put to use in a useful way! :)

I hope for the best!

Ehi, ci siamo quasi!

                                     ITA

                               ENG
One week.

One more week and a new chapter of my life will begin.

I nourish many hopes about it, however I realize that all this excitement sometimes digresses into anxiety. Of course I'm so used to be an antsy person that by now I'm able to manage the majority of my worries, but there are moments when I'm more vulnerable, usually when I'm falling asleep or when I'm awakening. I can't control my thoughts so I unload all those worries that during the day I suppress. Oddly, I haven't dreamt anything about the moving or the new english life yet, but it won’t take long for them to arrive, as they always do before every journey: me, going to the airport without the ID, or realizing that I didn't book the tickets or I forgot the suitcase at home, or, if I'm lucky, I'm simply late. Indeed, last night I dreamt that I forgot my handbag with all my savings in it, my ID and my new cellphone in the train but I don't know if I have to consider it since the dream actually took place at the station for the airport of Cagliari but in the end I was  pressing charges in English.

I guess everything will feel even more real in the moment I'll pack the suitcase.

Althought I have to say that it'll probably be less problematic than I thought, basically I don't owe any winter clothes! I wear the few sweaters that I have only when I travel abroad and they have been in London for months now, for the rest my collection of clothes can be defined as spring/summer only. Here in Sardinia it's not cold, yes, there is moisture that seeps through the bones but there isn't necessary to muffle yourself so much so that I wear t-shirts and summer shoes wheter the season. This means less clothes to pack and way more shopping. :D

A few days ago my boyfriend has arrived and it's weird for us to think that this time we'll leave together and we won't have to do any countdown to see each other again. After many years, this moment has finally arrived, it seems to have passed an eternity since when we have started to live in different nations.

First, I moved to Spain for about a year to try the aupair experience, between the 2011 and the 2012. At the beginning of the 2013 it was his turn to move to Sweden to work as a cabin crew for Ryanair, in the year and a half that he lived there we have seen each other two months in total amounts, because the connections to Stockholm were few. The last summer we were lucky because he could spend two entire months before moving  to London to work for British Airways. A huge improvement considering he has the possibility to go home more often than before.

I have to say that I would have loved to live in Sweden and I could have learnt another language but surely in London it'll be simplier and the separation will be less traumatic since a lot of friends and acquaistance live there!

Right now, we're remaining confident and we're trying not to make plans in the long distance untill I’ll find a job and we’ll have an economic stability. I would like to do a trip, even short,  considering that I haven't done one in all the 2015 but it will be  hard, also because in november the rental contract will exprire and we'll have to move in another place. I was determined to avoid flatmates after a disastrous experience some years ago but for three months I guess there won't be problems, then finally we'll have a place on our own and also if probably it'll have the dimension of a storage closet I can't wait for it!

This last week will be in the sign of the goodbyes, the cocktails and obviously the sea! I have to take advantage of these last useful days to tan because the london'weather doesn't matter that it's summer!

Finalmente!

ITA

Incredibile!

ENG

Unbelievable! Unbelievable, but true!

The driving licence purpose has been achieved, so I can officially start the countdown for the move!
What a relief and satisfaction!

If there won’t be any additional delay and setbacks the departure will be August the 8th!

A couple of days ago, complicit the boredom, I found the strength to begin the preparations for the departure. The first voice of one of my many lists is the reorganization of my room, which probably will be overtaken by my brother as soon as I step out of home to go to the airport.

I started getting rid of the most part of the copies and the raw materials from university, although it was heartrending and a voice in my head repeated perpetually: “What if one day you want to read something about microeconomics? Or what if you have curiosities about the Manus and the hedgehogs? How can you throw away your history notes??”, but I muster up courage and I withhold only original books or the English and Spanish textbooks which are always useful.

Obviously at the end of those first afternoon of work I was contacted by the authorities to supply explanations about the new mountain chain set up with any type of paper that grown from my room.

It’s astonishing to think about how many objects we collect during our lives, in addition I have difficulties to let go and I’m inclined to keep  anything, from crumpled flight tickets to the gift papers, not to mention the old make-up sets, the dry mascaras and the microscopic eye pencil. This time I get rid of all the unnecessary but I’m aware that despite that, the space in the suitcase won’t be enough.

There are so many things to do and by now it left only three weeks at the move, but at last I can do something tangible and above all I have a date!

ITA

È passato qualche giorno e ora mi sento pronta a parlarne…

Forse ho troppe scarpe e vestiti? No, non mi pare! XD

Questa è la mia faccia assatanata di ciambelle - This is my "I want more donuts" face

ENG

Some days have passed and now I’m ready to talk about it…

My practical exam for the driving license went bad so unfortunately my departure has been postponed more than a month further away, and maybe even more. I’m quite disappointed, I knew that it could happen but I convinced myself that I could do it, I’ve worked hard for months and I employed the last weeks fighting the stress and the uncertainty, thinking resolute but it wasn’t enough. After a first moment of sadness in which I was determined to leave anyway, I submitted myself to the idea of trying again.
Oh well…

Still here and this time no excuses, I’ll commit myself with English and I’ll arrange this blessed  transfer in a proper way, also because I made a little list not conclusive of what I’ll take away with me and I have no idea of how to put everything in one suitcase, maximum two.

Maybe I have too many shoes and clothes? No, I don’t think so! XD

In some way I throw together and surely I’ll forget something, if anything else goes wrong I know a website where they send the suitcases to the chosen address and they pick them up directly at your home! It already saved my life in Madrid (therapeutic shopping has its cons).

Probably it won’t be necessary, in a pair of weeks my boyfriend will arrive here and I have all the intentions to fill up the suitcase he’ll board with my winter clothes and the shoes I won’t need soon. I almost half minded to add my favorite books, those that I’m sure I couldn’t do without them far from home.
It’ll be difficult deciding what to carry with me and what to leave here but fortunately I love doing lists of any types. :D

Another news of the day, my boyfriend a while ago took some days off for the end of July until the second middle of august so we decided that we’ll leave together at the end of his vacation. I'm not particularly enthusiastic of postponing another time my departure but the only alternatives were leave right after the exam and then stay alone in London for two weeks or come back to Sardinia and use part of my savings for this.

I just hope that this doesn't take to postpone the departure infinitely...

The super positive note in this situation is that I can take advantage of these two months in front of me to dedicate my time to the suntan, reading, go to the japanese and spend some time with my friends.

And with this sea and these friends it won't be anything but a wonderful summer!

P.S. Today was “The International Donut Day”, I couldn't celebrate it by eating my loved donuts but as soon as I’ll have the occasion I think I'll clean out a Dunkin Donut!

Tentativi (poco riusciti) di preparativi pre-partenza.

ITA

Direi che va bene così, no? ;)

Beh ci avevo provato.... Well, I tried!

ENG

It's astonishing how rapidly the time passes when you don't work anymore.

Today is already 28, more than three weeks have passed since the end of my voluntary year and I have these thirty hours of free time a week that at least before I used for something useful. Well, actually, I don’t feel useless yet: I sleep well but I don't wake up at lunch time, I do two or three driving lessons a week and I find excuses for not setting up my transfer to London.

I’m the world champion in finding plausible excuses to postpone any obligation.

I eventually know when my drive exam is going to be, although for incantation I’ve told that just a few people, but I don’t have the guarantee to pass it at the first attempt so I can calmly nurture the feeling to have all the time in the world to set up the transfer.

What’s the purpose of making lists of things to do or to take to London or also watching want ads if the departure may be postponed until the middle of July?

There you are, this is a typical example of usable excuse to make my conscience feel clear.
Well, to be fair I’ve tried to apply in the most important English job search websites but I immediately realized that beyond the invalid format of my cv (Europass accepted everywhere, yeah sure!) it was necessary an English address and an English phone number, no problem for the first one but for the second one it's too early. So I added “adapt the cv to the English world of work” to the “to do list” and for the moment I put my soul in peace.

One of my intentions before the departure was of course to study English to avoid a big shock on my arrival, but the major effort done until now was taking out my books and notes from the university and watching how beautiful they were just closed on my desk.

I say it's just right, isn't it? ;)

As it doesn't mention to study I fall back on television series! Since I met the streaming some years ago, I've been watching many series among which: Grey's Anatomy, The Tudors, How I met your mother, The big bang theory, Scandal, Misfits, Lost, Breaking Bad and many others. At the beginning I decided to watch them in Italian, later I've tried in the original language with subtitles. I remember that the first series I experimented was Gossip Girl, I was really sure that my listening would be improved and that I would learn new English expressions but the maximum I acquired were the sentences: "I'm so so sorry!" and "Are you kidding me?", it seemed that they couldn't say anything else.

Since then I preferred to watch the series in the original language because, let's say it!, the Italian dubbers may be the best in the world, as someone says, but nothing is like the actor's real voice and in any case it's not a big challenge considering that in the other countries like U.S.A or in the North of Europe they don't dub the movies. Then, there are countries like Spain where the dubbers are two, but two for real! I swear, in the nine months I've lived in Madrid it was a torture seeing foreign movies, there was only a voice for all the male characters and another one for the female ones.... What a shame!

During the years I improved a lot, so much that I upgraded to English subtitles, especially for the movies, and when I watch a tv series i can understand almost everything they say, especially the series I've been watching through the years.

Obviously I had to deal with the fact that the series I'm currently watching are American so the inflection is really different from the British one. I batten down the hatches look at again the second season of Misfits (the best in my opinion) and although I've already seen it I had some difficulties, especially with the character of Kelly whom is really unintelligible. I've tried to watch other series like Reign or Penny Dreadful but probably I'm not ready to see them without subtitles because I still ignore the plot of some episodes.

Not very promising, I agree.

The most recent attempts have been books. I read a lot and since when I don't work anymore I've increased the reading, both to occupy the time and because I'm aware that in the future I'll have less time to commit to it, above all for Italian books.

So why don't combine business with pleasure with an English book?

Obviously, not an English writer or I’ll be back to the drawing board. I think that the translated novels or the compositions written by not native authors are more simple to understand.
It’s not my first English novel, in the past months I’ve read “A splendid thousand suns” from Khaled Hosseini, it’s a book that I love and I know very well, this helps me because if I don’t understand a word or a sentence, I was capable to remember the translation from the Italian version. So I thought to repeat the experiment with a Swedish author Camilla Lackberg, from whom I’ve already read “The hidden child”, and I start “The lost boy”, that it isn’t the same book although similarity of the title.

Ready to start it! - Pronta a cominciarlo!
I’m persuaded that all this it will be useful but I fell I’m ignoring the key factor: the spoken part!
The Italian school and the university, when it comes to foreign languages, tend to concentrate to the grammar and to the writing parts and they don’t dedicate much time to conversation. I have to add that I hardly ever interested in improving this aspect and I privileged the in-depth analysis of Spanish and here we have the complete picture. Ah! Besides I’m a very shy person when I met new people….

The next months will be very amusing! :D
